Gilbert G. Otero was born and raised in Brawley, California. He graduated from Brawley Union High School in 1973 and earned a Bachelor’s degree in 1978 from San Diego State University. He obtained his law degree from Western State University College of Law in 1983. After graduating from law school he returned to Imperial County and opened his own law practice in Brawley.
Mr. Otero was elected District Attorney in June 1994 and took office in January 1995. As the elected District Attorney he served two terms as President of the California District Attorneys Association (CDAA) in 2002 to 2004, co-chair of the CDAA Rural Counties Committee and was a member of the State Advisory Committee on Sexual Assault under the former California Office of Criminal Justice Planning. He is currently on the CDAA Board of Directors. In addition to his involvement with CDAA, Mr. Otero serves on the Executive Boards of the California Border Alliance Group and the Imperial Valley Drug Coalition as well as Chair of the Imperial County Narcotics Task Force.
Mr. Otero and his wife, Deborah, have three children and two grandchildren.
